Mahjong for Android
★★★★ 4.0 | 1+ Installs

Mahjong is a free-to-play mobile game for four-player sessions, but it works best if you plan around its membership model. It delivers different difficulty levels, computer opponents, customizable rules, and detailed battle logs. The value isn't just in playing; it is in reviewing your tendencies afterward. I use it when I want a quick table experience without arranging four humans.

The Membership Payment Rules You Need to Know

This app uses a weekly subscription through your iTunes account, not a one-time unlock. It automatically renews every week from the application date. If you want to cancel, you have to do it at least 24 hours before the renewal period ends; otherwise the subscription renews and the fee is charged within the next 24 hours. What surprised me is that you cannot cancel directly inside the game through iTunes Store payment. You need to go to the App Store, tap your Apple ID, and manage your subscription from the Account screen. Also, the current week’s payment is not refundable if you cancel mid-week.

Mahjong Battle Records Are More Useful Than I Expected

I spent most of my first sessions just playing, but the detailed battle history is the reason I kept using the app. It groups your winning hands, tile preferences, and the patterns behind your discards in a way that feels more like a personal coach than a simple score sheet. After a few weeks, I could see that I was chasing too many mixed waits with closed hands. The limitation is that you still have to interpret those numbers yourself; there is no automatic advice telling you what to fix.

How the Custom Rules Change the Table

Before each round, you can adjust the rules to fit your mood. I have disabled red fives on days when I want a stricter classic session, and I have also shortened the han limit for faster games. The game modes are not just difficulty presets; they alter the rhythm of a match. That is why I think it works better for practicing specific situations than for mindless casual play. One drawback is that the amount of settings can feel overwhelming when you only have a few minutes to play.

Who Should Actually Install Mahjong?

The free Mahjong app suits solo players who want to practice against computer opponents at different levels. If you prefer to play with strangers online or want a one-time purchase without a weekly subscription, this is not the right game. The AI opponents are solid enough for learning, but a real table with friends is still different and no algorithm can replace the pressure of holding a lead against a human. I would also think twice if you hate managing recurring charges; a weekly subscription can feel like an unnecessary chore when you only play on weekends.
